Warming Up Your Luxury Car? Don't.

There are many myths surrounding proper driving and car maintenance. With the weather around Columbus, OH starting to turn colder, we thought it would be a good idea to address a common driving habit that's outlived its usefulness. Do this one simple thing and the engine on your luxury car will last longer. Fail to do so and you could be looking at more frequent (and expensive) trips to Byers Imports for maintenance.

Normally, we're as skeptical as anyone of anything that promises "one simple trick." This time, however, the trick is about saving you money rather than getting you to spend it. It's dead simple: stop warming up your car.

It seems counter-intuitive, especially since most of us are used to giving the car a few minutes to ease into an optimal engine temperature. That's especially true in the winter, when we might turn the heat on and let the car run for a good fifteen minutes. The car's nice and toasty when you climb in, and it's easier on the engine besides, right?

Not so fast. It turns out that letting your car idle for extended periods of time actually causes gasoline to leak into your motor oil. When that happens, the oil won't lubricate like it should. That causes engine wear. The ECU in a fuel-injected engine will find the optimal idle regardless of the temperature outside or under the hood.

Of course, there are always exceptions. If you drive an older car with a carburetor, it's still going to need to be warmed up a bit. Just don't overdo it. And regardless of what's under the hood, remember that the quickest way to warm up an engine is by simply driving.
