Porsche officially unveiled the 2021 911 Targa, a highly anticipated addition to the generation of Porsche 911 sports cars. The Targa received a virtual debut in lieu of the canceled 2020 Beijing Motor Show. Take a look at what we have learned about this new entrance on the Carrera 4 and 4S models and some of our favorite features.

Distinguishing Features of the New Sports Car

The new Porsche 911 Targa offers a new roof format (or body style) and features a retractable roof above the front seats as well as a characteristic wraparound rear window. The roll bar for this generation comes in silver as standard but it is also available in black to better accentuate whatever paint color drivers choose. Porsche shared that the Targa roof uses two flat magnesium pieces holding the fabric roof together, and the roof automatically retracts into its storage compartment at the press of a button. This process only takes 19 seconds.

Other features that distinguish the Targa from its coupe and convertible counterparts are the exaggerated wheel housings, an indent up front between the lights, and a wider rear spoiler.

Engines, Performance, & Packages

Other than these features, the Targa has a lot in common with its coupe and convertible counterparts. The Targa 4 is powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbo boxer-six that will make 379 horsepower and 331 pound-feet of torque. The 4S version increases this to 443 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. Each engine offers an eight-speed PDK transmission, but the 4S will offer a seven-speed manual option at no cost. When equipped with the Sport Chrono package, the Targa 4 will make the sprint from 0-60 in 4.0 seconds with a top speed of 179 miles per hour. The 4S with PDK and the same package will do 0-60 in 3.4 seconds with a top speed of 188 miles per hour.

The 2021 Porsche 911 Targa starts at $120,650 including destination fees for the Targa 4 and $136,550 for the 4S. It is still unknown if the unique Targa body style will be offered on any other Porsche variants.
